Why Left-Turn Highway Crashes Can Be Especially Dangerous
Left-turn roadway collisions often occur when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of approaching traffic while attempting to cross or merge into another lane. These crashes can become severe because the side of a vehicle offers less protection during an impact than the front or rear.
Intersections involving highways and connecting roads may present additional risks due to changing traffic speeds and limited reaction time. Investigators commonly review vehicle positioning, visibility, traffic patterns, and turning movements after these collisions occur. Crashes involving trucks and trailers may also result in greater impact force due to the towing vehicle’s larger size and weight.
