What Happens at the Scene of a Fatal Motorcycle-Vehicle Crash in California?
When a motorcycle-vehicle crash results in a fatality, the scene is treated as a crime scene until investigators can determine whether any laws were broken. Physical evidence, including vehicle positions, skid marks, debris fields, and traffic signal data, is carefully documented before anything is moved. This is why evidence tow trucks are used rather than standard tow services, ensuring the vehicles are preserved for forensic review.
A coroner is notified and responds to make an official determination. The coroner’s office assigns a case number that ties together medical findings, witness statements, and scene documentation. This process takes time, which is why fatality scenes can remain closed to traffic for several hours after the initial report.
Motorcycle crashes at intersections are among the most closely reviewed crash types in California. Factors such as signal status, vehicle speed, right-of-way, and visibility at the time of the collision are all examined as part of a thorough investigation.
