Why Left-Turn Crashes at Intersections Can Be So Dangerous
Left-turn collisions are among the most common types of intersection crashes. They often occur when a driver attempts to cross one or more lanes of oncoming traffic and misjudges the speed or distance of approaching vehicles.
Because vehicles involved are frequently traveling in different directions, the resulting forces can be substantial. In busy intersections, a single collision may also lead to secondary impacts involving additional vehicles or roadway debris.
Investigators reviewing a left-turn crash typically examine traffic patterns, vehicle positions, witness statements, and roadway evidence. Signal timing, visibility conditions, and driver actions are often evaluated as well. These factors can help establish the sequence of events and explain how multiple vehicles became involved in the collision.
