Amarillo, TX (May 26, 2026) – One person died, and another was seriously hurt following a head-on collision on Tuesday, May 26,  along State Highway 136 near El Rancho Road north of Amarillo.

According to the Potter County Sheriff’s Office, emergency units were called to the roadway after two vehicles struck each other head-on near the intersection. The Texas Department of Public Safety later confirmed one person lost their life from injuries connected to the crash.

Another person involved was taken to a hospital with serious harm. Investigators also reported a secondary roadway accident happened nearby, though that driver was not injured. State Highway 136 was temporarily shut down in both directions about five miles north of State Loop 335 before traffic was reopened.

Investigators remain at work determining what caused the deadly wreck on Highway 136. We extend our sincere sympathies to the family of the person who died and hope the injured person recovers fully.

Why Head-On Highway Crashes Are Often Severe

Head-on roadway collisions are among the most dangerous types of traffic crashes because both vehicles may be traveling at high speeds when they collide. The combined force created during these impacts can lead to catastrophic vehicle damage and life-threatening injuries.

Rural highways and two-lane roads may pose additional risks because opposing traffic travels without large physical barriers separating the directions. Investigators often review lane positioning, visibility, weather conditions, and driver actions leading up to these crashes. Secondary roadway collisions can also occur when nearby drivers suddenly slow down or encounter blocked traffic after a major highway crash. Emergency closures are common in these situations to allow crews to clear debris and safely reopen travel lanes.
