Why Head-On Highway Crashes Are Often Severe
Head-on roadway collisions are among the most dangerous types of traffic crashes because both vehicles may be traveling at high speeds when they collide. The combined force created during these impacts can lead to catastrophic vehicle damage and life-threatening injuries.
Rural highways and two-lane roads may pose additional risks because opposing traffic travels without large physical barriers separating the directions. Investigators often review lane positioning, visibility, weather conditions, and driver actions leading up to these crashes. Secondary roadway collisions can also occur when nearby drivers suddenly slow down or encounter blocked traffic after a major highway crash. Emergency closures are common in these situations to allow crews to clear debris and safely reopen travel lanes.
