McDuffie County, GA (July 29, 2026) – One person was killed, and three others were taken to a hospital after a head-on accident on Hwy 221 near Rachel Rd on Monday, July 27. The wreck happened at approximately 6:30 p.m. near Dearing.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, a 2014 Nissan Rogue was traveling north on Hwy 221 when it moved onto the east shoulder of the roadway. The SUV lost control while attempting to return to the travel lane, crossed into southbound traffic, and struck a 2016 Nissan Altima head-on.
The McDuffie County Coroner’s Office identified the person who died as 78-year-old Geneva Cumpton of Harlem. Cumpton was a passenger in the Nissan Rogue and was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people were taken to an Augusta hospital after the collision.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation as investigators continue reviewing the available information. Our condolences go out to Geneva Cumpton’s family and loved ones.
