Evans, GA (June 25, 2026) – An 84-year-old man lost his life following a head-on collision on Washington Rd in Evans on Wednesday morning. The fatal wreck occurred west of Washington Commons Dr at about 10:14 a.m.
According to investigators, Vernon Lewis of Evans was driving a 2019 Nissan Versa westbound when, for reasons not yet determined, the car crossed into the eastbound lanes. A 2025 GMC Yukon swerved in an attempt to avoid the Nissan, but the Versa struck the SUV before continuing forward and hitting a 2020 Chevrolet 2500 head-on.
Lewis was pronounced dead at the roadway despite lifesaving efforts. Information about anyone else involved was not immediately released. Portions of Washington Rd were closed for a period following the collision. Investigators are continuing to examine what led to the accident, and an autopsy has been scheduled.
