What Factors Can Contribute to Motorcycle Loss-of-Control Crashes?
Motorcycle loss-of-control crashes can occur for several reasons, often involving a combination of roadway, vehicle, and rider-related factors. Because motorcycles balance on two wheels, they can be more sensitive to sudden steering inputs, changes in road surface conditions, and shifts in traction.
Speed can influence a rider’s ability to navigate curves, hills, and uneven pavement safely. Loose gravel, wet surfaces, debris, or unexpected obstacles may also make it harder to maintain control. Mechanical issues, including tire or brake problems, can further increase the risk of a serious crash.
When a motorcycle enters opposing traffic, the likelihood of severe injuries rises significantly due to the limited protection available to riders. Head-on impacts often generate substantial force, particularly when larger vehicles are involved. Investigators typically review roadway conditions, vehicle evidence, and witness accounts to better understand the sequence of events that led to a loss of control.
