Why Rear-End Motorcycle Crashes Can Be Especially Serious
Motorcycle crashes involving the rear of another vehicle often result in severe outcomes because riders have far less protection than occupants inside passenger vehicles. Even at moderate speeds, a sudden stop or contact with another vehicle can throw a rider from the motorcycle.
Several factors are commonly reviewed after these types of roadway tragedies. Investigators may examine visibility, lighting conditions, traffic patterns, vehicle positions, and roadway markings. Mechanical issues, braking distance, and driver actions are also often considered when reconstructing what happened.
Nighttime travel can add challenges because reduced visibility may limit reaction time for everyone using the roadway. Physical evidence, witness statements, and vehicle damage patterns can help provide a clearer picture of how a motorcycle and another vehicle came into contact and what factors contributed to the outcome.
