What Can Cause a Vehicle to Cross the Center Line?
Crossing the center line can lead to some of the most serious roadway crashes because it places vehicles directly into the path of oncoming traffic. These collisions often occur with little time for drivers to react or avoid contact.
Several factors can contribute to a vehicle leaving its lane. Driver distraction, fatigue, medical emergencies, poor visibility, and adverse weather conditions are among the circumstances frequently examined after such crashes. Mechanical issues, including tire failures or steering problems, may also affect a driver’s ability to maintain lane position.
Roadway design and traffic volume can also influence the severity of these collisions. When a vehicle enters opposing lanes, multiple vehicles may become involved, increasing the likelihood of injuries and fatalities. Investigators typically review physical evidence, vehicle damage patterns, and roadway conditions to better understand how a center-line crossing occurred.
