Why Highway Pedestrian Crashes Often Lead to Severe Injuries
Pedestrian crashes on major highways are often especially serious because of the higher travel speeds involved. Unlike city streets, toll roads and interstates are not designed for foot traffic, leaving people with very little protection from moving vehicles. Even drivers who react quickly may not have enough distance to stop safely.
Many highway pedestrian cases also lead to extended road closures while crews clear debris and document evidence. Factors commonly reviewed afterward include lighting, visibility, vehicle speed, traffic flow, and whether the person was standing or moving in travel lanes. Mental health concerns, weather, and driver reaction time may also become part of the overall review process.
