Why Are Rear-End Highway Crashes Sometimes Fatal?
Rear-end crashes on highways can become severe when vehicles are traveling at high speeds or when a stopped vehicle is difficult to see ahead. The difference in speed between moving traffic and a stationary vehicle can create a dangerous situation with little time for drivers to react.
Large commercial trucks can also pose additional risks due to their size and weight. Drivers approaching slow or stopped traffic may need more distance to brake safely, especially when visibility is limited or traffic patterns change suddenly. Highway conditions, driver attention, weather, and roadway congestion can all affect how quickly a driver recognizes a hazard. Proper following distance and awareness of changing traffic conditions are key factors in reducing the risk of serious rear-end collisions.
