Why Lane-Change Crashes on Highways Can Become Serious
Lane-change crashes can quickly become dangerous on highways because vehicles are often traveling at higher speeds with limited time to react. A sudden movement into another lane may lead to side-impact collisions or cause drivers to lose control while attempting to avoid contact.
SUVs involved in roadway collisions may also overturn if a driver overcorrects or leaves the pavement at speed. Rollovers can increase the likelihood of severe injuries due to the force and movement involved during the crash sequence.
After these types of collisions, investigators commonly examine tire marks, vehicle positions, and roadway conditions. They may also review traffic patterns and driver maneuvers to better understand how the lane change occurred and what factors contributed to the overturn.
