Why Loss-of-Control Crashes Can Become Head-On Collisions
Loss-of-control crashes can quickly escalate when a vehicle leaves its lane of travel and enters opposing traffic. On two-way roads, even a brief departure from a lane can place a vehicle directly into the path of oncoming traffic.
Speed is often a key factor in these situations because higher speeds reduce a driver’s ability to correct steering errors or regain traction. Road curvature, surface conditions, and sudden maneuvers can also contribute to a vehicle crossing the center line.
When a head-on impact occurs, the forces involved are typically greater than in other types of collisions due to the combined speed of both vehicles. Investigators commonly review vehicle damage patterns, roadway markings, and event timing to understand how and why control was lost before the collision occurred.
