How Overpass Crashes Can Lead to Severe Outcomes
Crashes involving vehicles leaving elevated roadways often result in significant damage due to the additional force created by the fall. Guardrails are designed to help prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway, but severe impacts can sometimes overcome these barriers.
When a vehicle falls onto a lower roadway, investigators typically review speed, vehicle movement, roadway design, and damage to safety structures. Fire can further complicate rescue efforts and make it more difficult to determine exactly what occurred. Physical evidence from the roadway and vehicle is often used to help reconstruct the sequence of events and understand how the crash developed.
