Why House Fires Can Cause Fatal Injuries and Smoke Exposure
House fires can become deadly quickly because smoke and toxic gases may spread faster than flames. People inside may have only moments to escape, especially if the fire starts overnight while residents are sleeping.
Smoke inhalation can harm breathing, even when a person does not suffer visible burns. Medical teams may check for coughing, dizziness, airway irritation, carbon monoxide exposure, and other breathing problems. Investigators may review the fire’s point of origin, electrical systems, heating sources, smoke alarms, and burn patterns to determine how the fire started.
