Fort Towson, OK (June 7, 2026) – One person died Friday night, June 5, in a two-vehicle crash on US-70 in Choctaw County near Fort Towson. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported the collision occurred when a vehicle entered the highway from Main Street and was struck by an eastbound vehicle.
Investigators said a 69-year-old man identified as Joey Woodham was pulling onto US-70 from Main Street when the other vehicle struck his vehicle. Emergency units responded to the scene, but he did not survive his injuries.
No additional details about the second driver or possible contributing factors were released. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. We sympathize with the family of Joey Woodham.
Why Highway Entry Crashes Can Be So Dangerous
Crashes that occur when a vehicle enters a highway from a side street can be especially severe due to differences in speed between vehicles. Traffic on highways often travels at higher speeds, leaving little time for approaching drivers to react.
T-bone or side-impact collisions are common in these situations and can result in serious or fatal injuries because the sides of vehicles offer less protection than the front or rear. Limited gaps in traffic can also increase risk when drivers misjudge timing while merging or crossing.
Safety experts recommend carefully checking both directions, waiting for clear gaps, and avoiding rushed turns onto high-speed roadways.
