Why Overnight Expressway Crashes Can Become More Severe
Traffic crashes that happen during overnight hours on major expressways are often more serious because of reduced visibility and higher driving speeds. Fewer vehicles on the road may also lead some drivers to travel faster than normal, which can increase the force involved when two vehicles collide. Fatigue can also become a factor during late-night and early-morning travel, especially for drivers who have been on the road for long periods.
Roadway lighting, weather, and lane closures may further affect how drivers react in sudden situations. After a major freeway crash, investigators sometimes review traffic camera footage, vehicle positions, and roadway marks to better understand how the sequence unfolded. Medical findings and vehicle damage may also help clarify the severity of injuries reported after the collision.
