Federal Way, WA (August 25, 2026) – One person died and three others were injured early Sunday morning, August 23, in a multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5 near South 336th Street. The crash was reported at approximately 3:40 a.m.

Investigators said a driver suspected of impairment had fled a traffic stop and traveled about 13 miles before striking an uninvolved vehicle carrying four people. One occupant of that vehicle died at the scene.

The other three occupants were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. After the initial impact, the fleeing vehicle reportedly lost control and struck a pursuing state police vehicle.

The 24-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI, eluding, and vehicular homicide.

Authorities continue reviewing the collision. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who died, and we hope the three injured occupants recover fully.

How Can High-Speed Multi-Vehicle Crashes Cause Very Different Injury Outcomes?

When several vehicles are involved in a fast-moving collision, each occupant can experience a different level and direction of force. One vehicle may take the brunt of the initial impact while others are struck at different angles.

Secondary collisions can add another layer of danger, especially when a vehicle loses control after the first crash. Head, chest, spinal, and internal injuries can result from sudden deceleration and repeated impacts.

Travel speed, restraint use, seating position, vehicle size, and impact sequence can all influence injury severity. This helps explain why people in the same vehicle or crash can have very different outcomes.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
