Troopers were unable to put out the flames or remove the trapped driver. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities were still working to identify him.
Three people in the Jeep were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The person in the SUV was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation as police continue reviewing the pursuit and the events leading up to the fatal collision. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who died, and wish those injured a swift and full recovery.
Why Fiery Multi-Vehicle Crashes Can Be Severe
Fiery multi-vehicle crashes can become deadly within moments because fire, smoke, and damaged vehicle structures can make rescue efforts extremely difficult. When a vehicle catches fire after a head-on collision, first responders may face heat, flames, leaking fluids, and blocked access to the person inside.
Multi-vehicle crashes can also involve several impact points. One vehicle may strike another, cross lanes, or be pushed into oncoming traffic. Investigators may review speed, vehicle damage, pursuit conditions, spike strip use, road layout, witness statements, and camera footage to understand how the crash unfolded.
