Tonica, IL (August 30, 2026) – One person was killed, and three others were injured on Friday night, August 28, in a head-on crash near Route 251 and North 17th Road just south of Tonica. Emergency crews were called shortly after 9:00 p.m.

According to Lostant Fire and EMS, several people were trapped in the wreckage, prompting requests for additional fire and medical personnel and equipment.

Three injured people were flown from the scene by OSF Life Flight. The coroner was also called to the crash site. Both vehicles reportedly had substantial front-end damage.

The identities of those involved were not released. Route 251 was closed in the area for an extended period while responders handled the scene.

Authorities continue reviewing the collision. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who died, and we hope the three injured people recover fully.

Why Severe Front-End Damage Can Trap Occupants

Head-on collisions can expose occupants to powerful forces because vehicles traveling in opposite directions may close distance quickly before impact.

Severe front-end damage can also deform the passenger compartment and trap occupants inside, requiring firefighters to use specialized extrication equipment before patients can be removed safely.

Travel speed, impact angle, restraint use, vehicle structure, and the extent of intrusion can all affect injury severity. When several people are trapped or seriously hurt, medical helicopters and additional rescue crews may be needed to move patients quickly to advanced trauma care.
