Why Do Cargo Vans Overturn More Easily Than Other Vehicles in a Crash?
Cargo vans carry much of their weight higher off the ground compared to a typical sedan, since the cargo area sits above the wheelbase rather than low and centered. This higher center of gravity can make a van more prone to tipping when struck at certain angles or forced into a sudden change of direction.
A loaded van adds another variable, since cargo shifting during a crash can further destabilize the vehicle mid-impact. Depending on how weight is distributed inside, this shift can make a rollover more likely than it might be for an empty vehicle of the same size.
Investigators typically examine the point and angle of impact alongside the van’s loading to understand why it overturned in this particular crash. This kind of review helps establish how the initial collision translated into the specific outcome for each vehicle involved.
