Catawba County, NC (June 19, 2026) – A 22-year-old man lost his life, and two others were injured following a two-vehicle collision on NC-16 at Buffalo Shoals Road in Catawba County on Thursday morning, June 18.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the intersection at approximately 11:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious crash.

Investigators determined that a 2026 Hyundai Tucson was traveling northbound on NC-16 when it reportedly entered the intersection against a solid red traffic signal at Buffalo Shoals Road. The Hyundai then collided with a 2004 Ford Explorer.

Authorities said the driver of the Hyundai, identified as 22-year-old Sheck Kamara of Charlotte, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 26-year-old Gastonia resident who was riding in the front passenger seat of the Hyundai was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The 19-year-old driver of the Ford Explorer, a resident of Claremont, was taken to CMC Lincoln with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers reported that their preliminary investigation found no indication that speed or impairment contributed to the collision. Officials also stated that no charges are expected to be filed in connection with the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Sheck Kamara and wish the injured victims a full recovery.

Why Red-Light Intersection Crashes Are Severe?

Collisions that occur at signalized intersections result in significant vehicle damage and serious injuries because of the angles and speeds involved. When a vehicle enters an intersection against a traffic signal, cross traffic may have little opportunity to avoid a collision.

Investigators reviewing intersection crashes typically examine traffic signal operation, vehicle movements, witness statements, roadway evidence, and any available surveillance footage. These details help establish the sequence of events leading up to the impact.

Other factors such as visibility, traffic conditions, and driver actions are also considered during the investigation. By analyzing all available evidence, authorities determine how the collision occurred and identify any contributing factors.
