Tuscarawas County, OH (July 2, 2026) – One 14-year-old died, and another was hurt in a single-vehicle UTV crash on Township Road 203 in Clay Township on Tuesday afternoon, June 30. The crash happened around 1:05 p.m.
A 2013 Polaris Ranger UTV carrying two 14-year-olds was traveling north on Township Road 203 when the driver attempted to navigate a left curve. The UTV left the right side of the road, overturned, and ejected both kids.
One teen was flown by medical helicopter to Akron Children’s Hospital for treatment. The other was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither was wearing a seat belt or helmet at the time of the wreck. The accident remains under active investigation.

What Are the Risks of Operating a UTV Without Safety Equipment?
UTVs, sometimes called side-by-sides, are designed with roll cages and seat belt systems specifically because they are prone to overturning, particularly on uneven terrain or during sharp turns. When occupants are not restrained, an overturn can eject them from the vehicle entirely, removing any protection the roll cage might have otherwise provided. Helmets offer additional protection for the head during ejection, significantly reducing the risk of fatal injury.
Younger riders face heightened risk when operating or riding in UTVs, partly because their physical development affects how they absorb impact forces. Many states have age restrictions and supervision requirements for minors operating off-road vehicles, recognizing that judgment and reaction time are still developing at younger ages. These regulations vary by state and vehicle type.
Curves and changes in road surface are among the most common trigger points for UTV rollovers. When a driver does not slow sufficiently before entering a curve, the vehicle’s center of gravity can shift quickly to one side, initiating a tip that leads to a full overturn. Speed management and familiarity with a vehicle’s handling are both important factors in preventing these types of crashes.
