ORANGE, Orange County, Calif., Oct. 17, 2026 — A pickup truck and an SUV collided Friday evening, October 16, on northbound Interstate 5 near State Route 57 in Orange, blocking the carpool lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported just after 6 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-5 just south of the SR-57 interchange, in the area of the HOV lane. A gray Toyota Tacoma and an SUV were involved, and the wreck left the lane walled off to traffic as crews responded.
An early report said a vehicle occupant was not responding, though the CHP's incident notes shortly afterward classified the crash as a minor-injury collision. The extent of any injuries has not been released.
The lane closure held for roughly half an hour before all lanes reopened, according to CHP traffic logs. A tow truck was called to remove the Tacoma, which had rear-end damage, and the vehicle was taken to a nearby lot in the area of Orangewood Avenue and State College Boulevard, the report said. The California Highway Patrol's Freeway Service Patrol also responded and later closed out its assistance call.
No further details on what led to the crash have been released. The CHP has not said whether anyone was cited.
We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid crashes like this one? Leaving extra following distance, checking mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes, and avoiding distractions are some of the most reliable ways to prevent the kind of sudden rear-end or lane-change collisions common on busy freeway interchanges.
What injuries typically result from freeway collisions? Even in crashes classified as minor, people usually suffer whiplash, back and neck strain, or bruising from seatbelts and airbags. Some injuries, especially soft-tissue ones, don't show symptoms until hours or days later.
What usually causes crashes in HOV and interchange areas? Sudden braking, merging conflicts, and following too closely are frequent factors near interchanges, where traffic speeds vary, and lane changes happen quickly.
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is? Yes. Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react and increase the force involved in a collision, which is why crashes on faster-moving freeway segments tend to cause more serious damage and injury than those in slower traffic.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Orange, CA
If you're involved in a freeway collision, try to move to a safe area, such as the shoulder, if the vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Turn on hazard lights and call 911 to report the crash and request medical help if anyone feels hurt, even if the pain seems minor at first. Exchange information with the other driver and take photos of the vehicles and surroundings if possible. Afterward, see a doctor for a checkup, since some injuries take time to appear, and keep records of any medical visits or vehicle damage for insurance purposes.
