Frequently Asked Questions
Are motorcycle crashes more likely to happen at intersections?
Yes. Intersections and points where roads merge or cross are common trouble spots for motorcyclists because other drivers often misjudge a rider's speed or fail to see them in time to react.
Does the road surface make a difference for motorcycle safety?
It can. Loose gravel, wet pavement, potholes, and uneven lane markings affect a motorcycle's traction far more than they affect a car, since a bike has only two contact points with the road.
What gear actually helps protect a rider in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, a reinforced jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce the severity of injuries in a fall or collision, though none can fully prevent harm.
What usually causes motorcycle crashes like this one?
Common factors include a following or merging driver failing to see the rider, speed, distraction, and low-light conditions, though the specific cause of any one crash is determined by investigators, not assumed.
