OTTAWA, Franklin County, Kan., Oct. 14, 2026 — A teenage driver suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle crash early on Tuesday morning, October 13, on a Franklin County highway, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 7:34 a.m. on K-68 Hwy at Vermont Rd, about seven miles east of Ottawa, Kan. Troopers said a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pickup had stopped at a stop sign on Vermont Rd and was preparing to turn right onto K-68 when it pulled into the path of an eastbound vehicle on the highway. The two vehicles collided.

The pickup's driver, identified by the patrol as 18-year-old Jenna A. Madden of Rantoul, Kan., was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, 65-year-old Keith W. Love of Pomona, Kan., was not hurt.

Investigators said both drivers were alone in their vehicles at the time of the crash and both were wearing seat belts. The crash remains under investigation.

We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

Where Intersection Crashes As This Tend to Cluster

Crashes between a vehicle entering from a stop sign and one already moving on the main road concentrate at rural, unsignalled intersections where a minor road meets a higher-speed highway. These junctions rely entirely on a driver's judgment of gap and closing speed, with no signal or flashing beacon to back up that decision. On two-lane highways with 55 mph or higher limits, a misjudged gap of even a second or two can put a stopped vehicle directly in the path of oncoming traffic.

Rural stop-controlled intersections also tend to see less traffic overall, which can work against safety rather than for it. Drivers grow used to long waits between vehicles and may pull out with less caution, while sightlines along flat, straight highways can make approaching vehicles appear farther away and slower than they actually are. Crops, grade changes, or roadside structures can shorten that sightline further at certain times of year.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 54 percent of young passenger-vehicle drivers killed with known restraint use were unrestrained in 2023. Seat belt use remains one of the few factors within a driver's control once a crash at an intersection like this is already underway.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do immediately after a car accident?

Move to a safe spot if possible, check for injuries, and call 911. Exchange information with the other driver and wait for law enforcement to document the scene, even if damage looks minor.

Where do most traffic accidents happen?

Intersections, both signalled and unsignalled, account for a large share of crashes, along with on-ramps and undivided rural highways where speeds are high and reaction time is short.

How can drivers reduce their crash risk?

Full stops at stop signs, checking twice before entering a highway, and wearing a seat belt every trip all lower the odds of a serious outcome if a crash does happen.

What injuries are most common in car accidents?

Common injuries include whiplash, broken bones, head and neck injuries, and internal injuries, with severity usually tied to speed, angle of impact, and seat belt use.
