Gasconade County, MO (May 20, 2026) – A 54-year-old man from Owensville was seriously injured Monday after a two-vehicle collision on westbound U.S. Highway 50, east of Fifth Street. The accident happened around 12:30 p.m.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the man was driving a Kia sedan when it struck the rear of a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 64-year-old man from Washington, Missouri. After hitting the truck, the Kia left the roadway to the right and struck a utility pole.
The Owensville man was taken to Mercy Washington Hospital in Washington. The pickup truck driver was not hurt. Both people were wearing seat belts at the time of the wreck.
No names were released in the initial report on the collision. The cause is still under review, and further details are expected as the inquiry moves forward.
We hope the injured man recovers fully and as quickly as possible.
What Can Happen to a Vehicle After a Rear-End Crash at Highway Speed?
When a rear-end collision happens at highway speed, the force can push a vehicle off its intended path in seconds. Drivers may lose steering control, especially if the hit is sudden and unexpected. On a divided highway, even a brief loss of control can send a vehicle off the road entirely.
Fixed objects like utility poles present a serious secondary hazard in these cases, often causing more harm than the original hit. The type of vehicle matters too; smaller sedans have less mass to absorb force compared to larger trucks.
However, seatbelt use can significantly reduce the severity of injuries when a vehicle strikes a stationary object, though serious harm is still possible depending on the speed and angle involved.
