PACIFIC BEACH, San Diego County, Calif., Sept. 15, 2026 — A 14-year-old boy died Saturday night, September 12, after his e-bike collided with a car at Balboa Ave intersection in Pacific Beach, according to authorities. The teen was an eighth-grade student at Pacific Beach Middle School.

According to San Diego police, the boy was riding an e-bike north on Olney St when he reportedly entered the intersection at Balboa Ave against a red light. He was struck by a 2023 Tesla Model 3 traveling west on Balboa Ave, driven by a 38-year-old man, police said.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died, authorities said. Police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The collision remains under investigation. Authorities have not released further details about the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim who died.

Why E-Bike Riders Get Hit at Intersections

E-bikes travel faster than traditional bicycles, often 20 miles per hour or more, which changes how quickly a rider closes the gap on a crosswalk or a stop light. That speed can catch both the rider and drivers off guard, especially at intersections where everyone expects a bicycle to move at a slower pace.

Impairment and fatigue remain common threads in fatal e-bike and pedestrian crashes, even when one side of the collision tests clean. A driver who is tired, distracted, or has been drinking reacts slower to a rider entering an intersection, and a rider who is fatigued or distracted may misjudge a light or a gap in traffic. Evening and nighttime hours see more of these crashes in part because visibility drops and impaired driving rates climb after dark.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, bicycle fatalities decreased from 183 in 2022 to 145 in 2023. That decline suggests enforcement and infrastructure changes can move the numbers, even as e-bikes bring new speed and volume to streets that were designed with slower bicycles in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do most traffic accidents happen?

A large share of crashes involving bicycles and e-bikes occur at intersections, where paths cross and turning or crossing vehicles meet riders who may be harder to see.

How can drivers reduce their crash risk?

Slowing down near intersections, scanning for bikes and pedestrians before turning, and avoiding distractions all help drivers react in time to avoid a collision.

What injuries are most common in car accidents?

Collisions between vehicles and e-bikes or bicycles often cause head, chest, and limb injuries to the rider, since a bike offers little protection compared to a car.

What are the most common causes of car accidents?

Common factors include failure to yield, running red lights or stop signs, distracted driving, speeding, and impaired driving.
