PANAMA CITY BEACH, Bay County, Fla., Oct. 7, 2026 — A 25-year-old man died Tuesday night, October 6, after being struck by an SUV while crossing County Road 392 in Panama City Beach. The Florida Highway Patrol said he was in a marked crosswalk at the time.

Troopers said the crash happened around 7:12 p.m. near the intersection of County Road 392 and Apalachee Street. The SUV was reportedly heading west on County Road 392 when it struck the man as he crossed within the marked crosswalk.

The man, a Panama City Beach resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. His name has not been released.

The crash remains under investigation. No additional details on the SUV driver or possible charges have been made public.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

Pedestrian Deaths by the Numbers

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian deaths accounted for 18 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2023. That figure has climbed over the past decade even as other categories of road deaths have leveled off, making people on foot one of the few groups whose risk has kept rising year over year.

Crosswalks are meant to give pedestrians a protected space to cross, but a marked crossing does not guarantee a driver will see or yield to someone in it. Visibility at night, vehicle speed, and the width of the road all affect how much time a driver has to react once a pedestrian steps off the curb.

Florida has repeatedly ranked among the states with the highest pedestrian fatality rates in the country. Flat, wide arterial roads like many found along the Gulf Coast are common sites for these crashes, particularly after dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?

Pedestrians generally have the right of way in a marked crosswalk, and drivers are required to yield to them. That right of way does not eliminate the danger of stepping in front of a moving vehicle, so caution from both sides is still essential.

How can drivers reduce the risk of hitting a pedestrian?

Slowing down near crosswalks, scanning both sides of the road before proceeding, and avoiding distractions such as phones are basic steps that cut reaction time and improve a driver's ability to stop in time.

What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?

Pedestrians struck by vehicles usually suffer broken bones, head injuries, and internal injuries, since they have no protection comparable to a vehicle's frame. Severity typically depends on vehicle speed at the point of impact.

What are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents?

Common factors include driver inattention, low visibility at night, speeding, and failure to yield at crosswalks or intersections.

If you're a witness, staying at the scene to speak with responding officers can help investigators piece together what happened. Pedestrians and drivers alike should request a copy of the official crash report once it becomes available, as it usually contains details useful for insurance or medical follow-up.
