Why Strong Winds Can Cause Semi-Truck Rollovers on Highways
Highways such as Interstate 90 often cross open areas where strong winds can affect large vehicles. Semi-trucks have tall trailers and broad sides that can catch powerful gusts, especially when traveling across exposed stretches of roadway.
When wind pressure pushes against the side of a trailer, it can reduce stability and cause the truck to tip or slide. Lighter or empty trailers may be even more vulnerable because they weigh less and can be pushed more easily by strong winds.
Drivers of large trucks often slow down or adjust their routes when weather conditions include heavy wind. In some situations, sudden gusts can still cause a vehicle to lose balance, particularly when traveling at highway speeds or near open terrain.
