PARK TOWNSHIP, SAINT JOSEPH County, Mich., Oct. 7, 2026 — A driver died Tuesday morning, October 6, in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Marcellus Road and Buckhorn Road in Park Township. According to Michigan State Police, a semi-truck and a Toyota 4Runner collided within the intersection.
Troopers with the Marshall Post said a preliminary investigation found the semi was headed east on Marcellus Road when the Toyota 4Runner was struck inside the intersection with Buckhorn Road at around 7 a.m. The crash killed the Toyota's driver, identified as a 50-year-old man from Marcellus, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi, a 58-year-old man, was not hurt, according to the release.
Investigators have not said whether seatbelt use, drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. State police said the case remains under investigation pending further review.
Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.
A Common Misconception About Crashes Involving Semi-Trucks
Many drivers assume that when a passenger vehicle collides with a semi-truck, it's the truck driver who is usually hurt or killed, given the size of the vehicle involved. The evidence does not support that assumption. In most car-versus-truck crashes, it's the occupants of the smaller vehicle who suffer the serious or fatal injuries, while truck drivers typically walk away.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28,595 large-truck occupants were injured in multi-vehicle crashes involving large trucks in 2023. That figure reflects how often these crashes involve more than one vehicle, and how the physical mismatch in size and weight tends to concentrate harm in the smaller car, not the truck.
Intersections add another layer of risk because a truck's size and weight make it slower to stop or clear a crossing than most passenger vehicles, which can narrow the window drivers have to react when paths cross.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds mean more force at the moment of impact and less time for either driver to react or brake, which tends to result in more serious injuries.
Why is distracted driving considered so risky?
Even a few seconds of taking your eyes off the road can mean missing a stop sign, a changing light, or another vehicle entering an intersection, especially at higher speeds or in rural areas with limited sightlines.
How do weather and road conditions factor into crashes like this?
Rain, fog, or low morning light can reduce visibility and traction at intersections, making it harder for drivers to judge gaps or stop in time, even when they're following the posted rules.
What should someone do right after a car accident?
Call 911, stay in a safe location if possible, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Get information from the other driver and wait for law enforcement to document the scene.
