PARK TOWNSHIP, Sturgis County, Mich., Oct. 7, 2026 — A man died Tuesday morning, October 6, in a two-vehicle crash involving a semi truck on Marcellus Road near Buckhorn Road in Park Township. The driver of the other vehicle, a semi, was not hurt, according to the Michigan State Police.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. at the intersection, troopers said. A preliminary investigation found the semi was headed eastbound on Marcellus Road when it collided with a Toyota 4Runner inside the intersection with Buckhorn Road.

The 50-year-old driver of the Toyota, reported to be a Marcellus man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 58-year-old semi driver was not injured, according to the report.

State police said the crash remains under investigation. No further details on the cause have been released.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

Why Intersection Crashes With Semis Turn Deadly

Rural intersections like the one where this crash happened often mix high speed limits with limited stopping sight distance. A car entering or crossing a road where traffic moves at 55 mph or faster has only a few seconds to judge whether a gap is safe, and a loaded semi needs far more distance to slow down or stop than that estimate usually accounts for.

Crashes at these crossings tend to cluster where a stop sign controls only one road and cross traffic on the other has no stop at all. Drivers unfamiliar with a rural intersection, or distracted for even a moment, can misjudge a semi's closing speed because a large vehicle moving fast often looks like it is traveling slower than it is.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 70 percent of people killed in large-truck crashes were occupants of other vehicles in 2023. The size and weight gap between a passenger vehicle and a semi tends to decide who survives a collision at an intersection, regardless of who had the right of way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does speed change how severe a crash turns out to be?

Yes. Higher speeds mean more force at impact and less time for either driver to react or brake, which raises the odds of serious injury or death, especially in a collision involving a much heavier vehicle like a semi.

Why is distracted driving considered so risky at intersections?

A few seconds looking away from the road is enough to miss a stop sign, misjudge an oncoming vehicle's speed, or fail to see cross traffic entirely, all of which matter most at intersections where vehicles are crossing paths.

How do weather and road conditions play into crashes like this?

Wet pavement, fog, or low morning light can reduce visibility and increase stopping distances, making it harder for drivers to judge gaps in traffic safely, particularly around large trucks.

What should someone do right after a car accident?

Move to safety if possible, call 911, and avoid discussing fault at the scene. Seek a medical evaluation even if injuries aren't immediately obvious, and get a copy of the police report once it's available.
