Rusk County, TX (August 9, 2026) – A passenger was killed on Friday afternoon, August 7, after a two-vehicle crash on SH 204 in Rusk County. The collision happened at about 3 p.m. as two pickup trucks were traveling northbound.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, one pickup tried to pass in a no-passing zone. The vehicle then overcorrected and struck the second pickup from behind before hitting a culvert. One of three people inside the first truck, a passenger, was taken to a hospital in Nacogdoches, where they later died.

The second pickup came to rest upright in a northwest ditch, and its driver, who was the only person inside, was not injured. The crash remains under investigation as officials continue reviewing what happened.

We are thinking of the family and friends and send our sincere sympathy.

What Information Is Examined After a Crash Involving an Unsafe Passing Attempt?

Crashes involving passing attempts can require a review of lane markings, vehicle positions, and how each vehicle was moving before the impact. Investigators may examine the roadway for evidence showing where a driver began passing and whether the vehicle crossed into another lane.

Damage to both vehicles can help show the points of contact and the direction each vehicle traveled afterward. Investigators may also review tire marks, photographs, witness accounts, and available video. Road conditions, visibility, and traffic patterns can provide further context about how the crash unfolded.
