Why Rollover Wrecks on Interstates Often Lead to Severe Injuries
Rollover crashes can be especially dangerous because vehicles may strike barriers, slide across lanes, or overturn multiple times before coming to a stop. These wrecks are more likely to cause fatal injuries when occupants are not secured with seat belts, since people inside the vehicle can be thrown against hard surfaces or ejected during the rollover.
SUVs and larger vehicles generally have a higher center of gravity than passenger cars, which can increase rollover risk during sudden steering movements or roadway departures. Interstate speeds may also make these crashes more severe because vehicles carry greater force at higher speeds. After a rollover, investigators often examine roadway marks, vehicle movement, barrier contact, and weather conditions to help determine how the sequence of events began and unfolded.
