Why Red-Light Violations Can Cause Severe Side-Impact Crashes
Crashes caused by red-light violations frequently occur at intersections where vehicles are crossing paths from different directions. When one driver enters an intersection against a traffic signal, other motorists may have little time to react or avoid a collision.
Side-impact crashes, sometimes called T-bone collisions, can be particularly dangerous because the sides of vehicles generally provide less protection than the front or rear. Occupants seated on the side of impact often face a greater risk of serious injury. Investigators reviewing these incidents typically examine traffic signal timing, vehicle speeds, witness statements, and physical evidence from the scene to determine how the collision occurred and identify contributing factors.
