A Common Misconception About Left-Turn Crashes
Many drivers assume a crash like this comes down to one driver simply not looking. In practice, left-turn collisions are usually a matter of misjudged gaps and closing speed rather than a failure to look at all. A driver can check an oncoming lane, see a vehicle, and still misread how fast it is approaching, especially on a rural highway with higher posted speeds.
It is also a common assumption that these crashes mostly happen on complex urban intersections with heavy traffic. Rural two-lane highways like SH-19, where a turning vehicle crosses the path of fast-moving opposing traffic, produce their own version of this risk, often with higher impact speeds than city intersections.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,979 passenger-car occupants were killed in two-vehicle crashes involving a passenger car and a light truck in 2023. The mix of vehicle types and speeds involved in a turning maneuver is part of why outcomes in these crashes vary so widely, from minor injuries to much more serious ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes crashes like this one?
Left-turn collisions are often tied to misjudged timing or speed of oncoming traffic, limited visibility, or a brief lapse in attention at the moment a driver commits to the turn.
Does speed make a difference in how serious the crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds mean less time to react and more force in a collision, which generally leads to more serious injuries and vehicle damage.
Why is distracted driving particularly risky at intersections or turns?
A turn requires a driver to judge the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles in a short window. Any distraction, even for a second or two, can lead to a misjudged gap.
Do weather or road conditions play a role?
They can. Reduced visibility, wet pavement, or glare can all make it harder to judge when it is safe to turn, even on a road a driver knows well.
