PAYNE SPRINGS, Henderson County, Texas, Oct. 23, 2026 — A woman was hurt, and two dogs died on Wednesday afternoon, October 21, after a mobile home caught fire on Forgotten Lane in Payne Springs, Texas.
Payne Springs Fire Rescue said crews arriving at the scene found a single-wide mobile home with heavy smoke showing and about 60% of the structure already burning. Firefighters found a woman in the yard who needed medical attention.
The woman was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Dallas, Payne Springs Fire Rescue said. Her condition has not been released.
The department said there was a delay in reporting the fire because neither person at the residence had a phone with them when the fire was discovered. Two dogs were found dead inside the home once crews got the fire under control.
Gun Barrel City Fire, Eustace Fire, the Henderson County Fire Marshal's office, UT Health EMS, and the American Red Cross also responded, according to Payne Springs Fire Rescue. The cause of the fire has not been released and remains under investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I discover a house fire?
Get everyone out of the structure first, then call 911 from a safe distance. Do not go back inside for belongings or pets if the fire has spread, and let trained crews handle search and rescue.
What injuries are most common in house fires?
Burns, smoke inhalation, and injuries from falls or collapsing debris while escaping are the most frequent. Smoke inhalation can cause lung damage even without visible burns, so anyone exposed should be checked by medical staff.
What usually causes residential fires?
Common causes include electrical faults, heating equipment, cooking accidents, and unattended open flames. Mobile homes can burn especially fast because of lighter construction materials and tighter floor plans.
What to Do After a House Fire in Payne Springs, TX
Anyone who escapes a house fire should get a medical evaluation even if they feel fine, since smoke inhalation symptoms can take hours to appear. Keep a phone accessible and charged, especially in rural areas where response times can be longer. Contact your local fire marshal's office for guidance on next steps, including documentation needed for insurance claims and safe re-entry once the structure has been cleared. If pets or other dependents are in the home, have an evacuation plan that accounts for them in advance.
