What Investigators Examine in Pedestrian Crashes
Pedestrian collisions frequently require a detailed investigation to determine how the incident occurred. Investigators may review factors such as vehicle speed, traffic signals, crosswalk locations, visibility, roadway conditions, and witness statements. Surveillance or dash camera footage may also be analyzed when available.
Because pedestrians have little protection in a collision with a motor vehicle, these crashes can result in severe or life-threatening injuries. Drivers can help reduce the risk of pedestrian crashes by remaining alert in areas with foot traffic, obeying speed limits, and yielding where required by law. Pedestrians can also improve their safety by crossing at designated locations whenever possible and remaining aware of approaching traffic.
