What Should Drivers Know About Pedestrian Safety?
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable when crossing or walking near roadways because they have little physical protection. Drivers can reduce risks by watching carefully at intersections, crosswalks, parking areas, and places with limited visibility.
Speed also affects pedestrian safety. A vehicle traveling at a lower speed generally gives a driver more time to recognize a person and stop. Lower speeds can also reduce the severity of injuries if a person is struck.
Drivers should avoid distractions and remain alert, especially during early morning or nighttime hours. Headlights should be used properly, and drivers should watch for people who may be difficult to see in low-light conditions. Pedestrians can improve visibility by wearing reflective clothing or using lights when walking after dark.
