Tucson, AZ (August 5, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed early on Wednesday, August 5, after being struck on Speedway Boulevard between 6th Avenue and Stone Avenue in Tucson. It happened around 4:30 a.m., police said. That stretch of Speedway Boulevard runs through downtown Tucson, near the University of Arizona campus.
The stretch of road was closed for several hours following the wreck. The victim’s identity had not been released as of Wednesday morning.
Police said more information would be released as the investigation continues, including details about what led to the collision and any potential charges.

Overnight pedestrian deaths tend to spike in areas with heavy foot traffic near bars, restaurants, and college campuses, since people may be walking home after venues close for the night. Reduced visibility, combined with fewer cars on the road, can sometimes lead drivers to speed up rather than stay alert for someone crossing the street.
Wide, multi-lane roads like Speedway Boulevard can be especially dangerous for pedestrians after dark. Longer crossing distances mean more time spent in the roadway, and streetlights don’t always provide enough illumination to make a person clearly visible from a moving vehicle, particularly if they’re wearing dark clothing.
Fatigue and impaired driving both become more common in the early morning hours, which can slow a driver’s reaction time even when a pedestrian is in plain view. Marked crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and well-lit intersections all help reduce risk, but they can’t fully account for a driver who isn’t paying close attention.
