What Should Drivers Know About Pedestrian Safety on Expressways?
Pedestrians on or near expressways face serious risks because vehicles travel at high speeds and have limited room to avoid someone in the roadway. A disabled vehicle can also leave a person exposed to passing traffic, particularly along narrow shoulders.
Drivers should remain alert when approaching stopped vehicles and avoid distractions that can reduce their ability to react. If a vehicle becomes disabled, occupants should move to a safe location away from traffic when conditions allow.
Emergency flashers can help make a stopped vehicle more visible, but they do not eliminate the danger. Drivers should slow down when approaching roadside incidents and provide as much space as safely possible.
