Columbus, OH (July 23, 2026) – One pedestrian was killed, and two other people were injured after a suspected impaired driver crashed into pedestrians and a parked vehicle on Tuesday evening, July 21, along 7th Avenue near High Street in Columbus.
According to police, the crash occurred outside a Kroger store when the driver of a Ford Mustang was traveling at a high rate of speed on 7th Avenue. Investigators said the driver ran a red light at the intersection with High Street before veering off the roadway and striking two pedestrians.
After hitting the pedestrians, the Mustang continued forward and came to rest on top of a parked Chevrolet that had a person inside.
One of the pedestrians suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead. The second pedestrian was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
The occupant of the parked Chevrolet had to be freed from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life before being taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Police said the Mustang driver remained at the scene and was taken into custody. Authorities believe the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and is facing an operating a vehicle while impaired (OVI) charge. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
The crash scene remained closed for several hours while investigators documented evidence and removed the vehicles.
