Dorchester County, SC (August 25, 2026) – A pedestrian died on Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle on I-26 in Dorchester County.
The wreck happened around 11:49 p.m. near mile marker 178 on the eastbound interstate. A 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling eastbound when it struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the interstate.
The Jeep driver was not injured. The pedestrian was pronounced dead following the collision. The circumstances surrounding the fatal accident are still being examined.

Why Are Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Especially Dangerous?
Interstate highways are designed for high-speed vehicle travel and generally do not provide safe paths for pedestrians. A person entering an interstate can be difficult for drivers to see, particularly at night or in areas with limited lighting.

Dark clothing, poor visibility, roadway design, and traffic volume can further increase risks for people walking near high-speed roads.
