Understanding Pedestrian Safety on Highways
Pedestrian accidents on highways usually result in severe or fatal injuries due to high vehicle speeds. Even in clear weather and dry conditions, motorists may have little time to react to someone unexpectedly entering the roadway. Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable on roads not designed for foot traffic, where sightlines and stopping distances are critical factors.
Highway safety experts note that visibility at night can greatly affect a driver’s ability to see pedestrians, and reflective clothing or lights can reduce the risk of being struck. Awareness, careful observation, and adherence to roadway rules are essential for both drivers and pedestrians to prevent deadly collisions on major highways.
