Portland, OR (May 28, 2026) – A man was left with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle early Thursday morning at Southeast Grand Avenue and Southeast Pine Street in Portland.
According to police, emergency units were called to the intersection just before 3 a.m. on Thursday, May 28. Medical personnel treated the pedestrian before he was taken to a nearby hospital for further care.
Investigators said the driver remained at the roadway and cooperated with questions following the crash. No names were released, and additional details had not been made public as of Friday.
Police continue working to determine what led up to the pedestrian being hit. We hope the man injured Thursday morning is able to make a full recovery.
Why Early Morning Pedestrian Traffic Can Increase Injury Risks
Pedestrian traffic during overnight and early morning hours can create added safety concerns for both drivers and people on foot. Lower visibility, reduced street lighting, and fatigue may make it harder for drivers to notice someone crossing a roadway, especially near busy intersections.
Road design can also affect how quickly motorists react. Wide streets, multiple lanes, and higher speed limits may leave less time to stop when someone enters a crosswalk or steps near traffic. Weather and dark clothing can further reduce visibility before sunrise.
After a pedestrian is hit, investigators often review roadway markings, lighting conditions, vehicle positioning, and witness statements. Surveillance video and nearby traffic cameras may also help piece together how the chain of events unfolded before the person was struck.
