Tampa, FL (August 30, 2026) – A 48-year-old Tampa man was killed early on Friday morning, August 28, after being struck by a tractor-trailer while attempting to cross US-41 in Tampa. The collision occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. north of 12th Avenue South.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 54-year-old Riverview man was driving a semi-truck southbound on US-41 when the pedestrian entered the roadway and stepped into the truck’s path. The man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the names of the pedestrian or truck driver.

The available information did not indicate whether any charges were being considered or whether road conditions contributed to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

What Should Pedestrians and Drivers Know About Roadway Safety?

Pedestrians crossing or walking near busy highways face significant risks, particularly during nighttime and early-morning hours when visibility may be limited. Whenever possible, pedestrians should use designated crossings and remain visible to approaching motorists. Drivers should stay alert for pedestrians who may enter or cross the roadway unexpectedly.

Reducing speed and carefully watching the road can provide additional time to respond to hazards. Darkness, poor visibility, and heavy traffic can make it more difficult for drivers to recognize people in or near travel lanes. Motorists should remain especially attentive in areas where pedestrians may be present.

Both drivers and pedestrians can help reduce the likelihood of serious collisions by following traffic laws, remaining aware of their surroundings, and exercising caution around busy roadways.
