Frequently Asked Questions
Does impairment contribute to fatal crashes?
Alcohol or drug use by a driver can raise the chances a crash turns deadly, though a role for impairment is only confirmed when an investigating agency says so.
Where do fatal crashes tend to happen?
Deadly crashes are common on rural highways and roads with higher speed limits, where vehicles are more likely to leave the roadway or strike fixed objects like embankments.
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?
Higher speeds, failure to wear a seatbelt, and a vehicle rollover or ejection all raise the odds a crash results in death.
How does speed affect whether people survive a crash?
Higher speeds give a vehicle more force to absorb in a collision and give occupants less time to react, which lowers the odds of walking away without serious injury.
