PEMBROKE, Bryan County, Ga., Sept. 30, 2026 — Four people died after a pickup truck struck two stopped tractor-trailers in a construction zone on Interstate 16 Tuesday afternoon, September 29, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Four juveniles were taken to a Savannah hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Troopers were called at about 2:10 p.m. to the eastbound lanes near mile marker 143 after a report of an unresponsive occupant in a vehicle. A preliminary investigation found a 2018 Kenworth and a 2015 Mack tractor-trailer had stopped in the right lane because of nearby construction work. A 2017 Ford F-250 traveling in the same lane reportedly struck the rear of the Kenworth, pushing it into the Mack ahead of it.
The Ford's driver, a front-seat passenger and a rear-seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Four juveniles from the Ford were taken to Memorial Hospital in Savannah with injuries described as life-threatening.
The Bryan County Coroner's office said Tuesday afternoon that a fourth victim, a child among those hospitalized, died overnight after the crash.
