PENINSULA TOWNSHIP, Saginaw County, Mich., Oct. 4, 2026 — One person died on Saturday morning, October 3, after a car left Center Road south of McKinley Road and struck a tree, according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Central Dispatch received a report of the crash at 7:49 a.m. The vehicle had been traveling south on Center Road when it reportedly ran off the roadway.

The driver was taken to Munson Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Investigators have not released the names or ages of either occupant.

Center Road was closed for about six hours while crews worked the scene. The Michigan State Police Crash Reconstruction Team and Peninsula Township Fire assisted the sheriff's office with the investigation.

The case remains open. Authorities believe speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, though that determination has not been finalized. Anyone with information has been asked to contact Detective Wolbers at the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.

What Actually Cuts Down Fatal Single-Vehicle Crashes

Roads that run off into fixed objects like trees and poles are a well-studied problem, and the fixes that work tend to be unglamorous: wider clear zones next to the pavement, breakaway signposts, guardrails placed where a shoulder drops into a ditch or tree line, and rumble strips cut into the edge line so a drifting car gets a warning before it leaves the road. Lighting improvements and better delineation on curves also help drivers correct in time.

Impairment changes the odds of these crashes turning deadly. Alcohol slows reaction time and narrows a driver's field of attention, so a car that drifts toward the shoulder is less likely to be steered back on time. When a vehicle does leave the roadway at speed, an impaired driver is also less able to brace or respond before impact, which raises the chance that a runoff-road crash ends in a death rather than a scare.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 40,901 people were killed in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023. A meaningful share of those deaths involved a single vehicle leaving its lane, which is why road agencies continue to invest in shoulder treatments and barrier systems, even on routes with light traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What role does impairment play in fatal crashes?

Alcohol and drugs slow reaction time and reduce a driver's ability to judge speed and distance, making it harder to correct after a vehicle drifts or to avoid a crash once one starts. Impaired drivers are also less likely to brace effectively on impact, which can worsen injuries.

Where do fatal single-vehicle crashes most often happen?

They cluster on rural roads with higher speed limits, limited lighting, and narrow or unprotected shoulders, where a car leaving the lane has little room to recover before striking a tree, pole, or ditch.

What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?

Speed, lack of seatbelt use, impairment, and the presence of a fixed object like a tree near the roadway all raise the odds that a crash results in death rather than injury.

How does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?

Higher speeds mean more energy has to be absorbed in a collision. Even modest increases in speed can sharply raise the forces involved, which lowers the odds of walking away without serious injury.
