Frequently Asked Questions
Does the condition of the road surface matter for motorcycle safety?
Yes. Loose gravel, potholes, wet pavement, and uneven lane markings can affect a motorcycle's traction and stability far more than they would a car's, since a bike has only two contact points with the road.
What gear helps protect a rider in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, a reinforced jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots can reduce the severity of injuries in a fall or collision, though no gear can fully prevent harm in a high-speed impact.
What usually causes motorcycle crashes like this one?
Common factors include a vehicle turning or crossing in front of a motorcycle, speeding, and drivers failing to see an oncoming bike at an intersection.
Why do motorcycle crashes commonly lead to more serious injuries than car crashes?
Riders lack the structure and restraints a car provides, so a collision can throw a rider from the bike, and that ejection usually causes much of the injury.
